Programme Overview

7 Day Jackaroo Jillaroo School

What will I learn at the Jackaroo/Jillaroo School?
The  course has been designed to be an introduction to  rural tourism and is a great ‘fun’ course! You will learn some great rural skills and a chance to experience life as it is in the outback.
All levels of rider are welcome, from complete beginner to advanced – your skills will be taken into account throughout the course. On the  Megalong Outback Farm there are plenty of  horses, cattle, sheep and dogs.

• Horse riding
• Sheep  work
• Fencing
• Mustering Cattle
• Campfires

• ATV Quad Bikes
• Whip Cracking
• Horse  Care

What if I have no experience with Horses?

We cater to your skills for beginners to experienced riders.  We are renown for our wide range of  quality horses of differing temperaments to match your skill. You will be shown how to put on a bridle and saddle and careful lessons on how to ride. Once we have helped match you to a horse that suits you and your riding experience, you will gain some practical  advice in hoof care and grooming for your horse,  instruction  on  riding techniques.  All horses are  well cared for and you get lots of hands on experience with their caring and well being.

Will I work with Sheep & Cattle?
The sheep are really a fun part of the programme when you try to get the sheep where you want them.  Contrary and unreasonable, the sheep are no match for the dogs but a challenge for inexperienced handlers. Once the sheep have been rounded up you will learn how to assist in drenching and shearing.  With the cattle you will learn where to be in the right place at the right time-cranky bulls are definitely to be avoided on the muster.

What is the climate & and what clothing do I need?
Megalong Valley has an enjoyable  range of temperatures year long from mild to cool winters June to August, superb mild weather in spring and autumn, and  a hot summer from November to March  The property is 1000 metres above sea level so even in the summer it can turn brisk so a sweater is advisable. Make sure you pack for the variable Australian weather a cold day in the summer is not unheard of.  Cold days in winter in the Megalong Valley means you get to wear a traditional drizabone.

A pair of boots for the footwear  is essential.

What about the accommodation and meals?
The great part of a Jackaroo course is the sense of spirit and friendship  it creates.   Many an evening can be spent around the campfire with the chance to enjoy an open-air camp oven cooked meal.  Sleeping quarters are provided in the bunkhouse. The property has a range of accommodations, and this programme allows for upgrades.

What is provided and what facilities are there?

Plenty of tucker, lots of adventure,  stockwhip, riding helmet and  a suitable horse for your experience level,  etc. The property has a liquor license so many an evening can be spent round the fire or at our outback pub with a cold beer. You can enjoy bush walking in the surrounding wilderness  trails. This is a great chance to take in the stunning scenery and maybe even catch a glimpse of wallabies, kangaroos or dingoes in the wild.

Is there opportunities to explore the region?

The property is located in the heartland of the Blue Mountains world Heritage Region. There are kilometres of the Cox's River to explore  This area  is rich with wonderful plant and birdlife and features caves to explore and swimming water holes to cool off in. A trip to rainforest area is sure to be a well-deserved break from the hard life of a Jackaroo  Many quality world class attractions are in the region, Jenolan Caves, Zig Zag Railway, Scenic Railway as well as extreme adventure sports such as abseiling, canyoning and rockclimbing.

What do I need to bring?

Sunglasses, sunblock, insect repellent,  bathers,  phone card (phones are available) and of course your camera and a sense of adventure.

Is there  mobile phone coverage?

Yes there is good mobile phone reception on the farm.   You might want to bring a spare phone card.

Who are the Staff?
The  property is a specialized centre and the Jackaroo Course  is  run by  highly skilled and friendly people.
Just like you, they love the outdoors and working  in a  relaxed environment.

You make lots of new friends and have ample downtime to enjoy the surrounding areas.   In no time you will soon  discover the appealing aspects of rural life.
