The 1850 Colonial Living
Experience
Step
back in time to see what colonial life was really like.
Now you can experience a hands on visit in an outdoor
1850's campground, complete with cooking fires, tents, and
the opportunity to wear clothing of the day.
This
program is designed to immerse participants in 1850's bush life.
Participants will learn the skills necessary to live in the
bush by cooking their own meals and learning many other colonial
skills. Commencing in 2008 sleeping quarters are in cotton
miners tents. Early settlers clothing can be
be easily made to enhance the experience.
The
CLE program is held at the Environmental Living Centre, which is
adjacent to, but not visible from, the office area of The
Megalong Bush Farm. It consists of a cleared area with tent and
cooking areas, toilets, community shelter and water.
Reproduction tools and equipment, which are furnished for the
program, are located within the camping area.
1850 Environmental Living
The
1850's Living in the Bush Program at Megalong Bush
Farm was established to provide students an opportunity to live
and experience the colonial period as represented at the living
history farm.
In this multidisciplinary,
curriculum-based program students learn history, environmental
science, and agricultural practices and processes through the
cultural laboratory of an 1850 Bush Farm.
This
Program offers an entire study group the opportunity to
participate directly in a recreated "encampment" which is the
culmination of research and preparation by all the participants.
School and family groups make
their own 1850's clothing, plan their own menus and work
projects, and then spend up to three days and two nights
living and working in their own 1850's community at the 1850's
Environmental Living Center at Stringy Bark Ridge a true
living history experience.
Both children and adults sleep
on bush beds in cotton tents, cook meals over an open fire and
learn skills necessary to life in New South Wales in
1850, such as spinning wool, woodworking, leather working,
candle making, butter churning, bread and cheese making, sewing
and kitchen gardening.
The
Environmental Living Center for the program is adjacent to, but
not visible from, the office area of the Megalong Bush
Farm. It consists of a cleared area with tent and cooking
areas, toilets, community shelter, and water. Reproduction
tools and equipment, which are furnished for the program, are
stored in a small colonial style building within the camping
area.
There is camping space for
around 50 persons and a large timber-frame shelter used for
program activities in inclement weather. There is
also a lodge for 20 students or a another more modern lodge for
35 students. The Center is open for use seven days a week.
Authentic miners bush tents will be available shortly to enhance
the experience.
The
fee for using the ELC is $18.00 per person with a minimum of 25
participants. The program is age appropriate for groups of
students age 8 and older or groups with younger children with
one on one adult supervision (i.e. families). Other costs the
group will incur include food, clothing, craft supplies, lime,
firewood and other consumables used during the program. For
